Slippage, noise and superradiant effects in the UCLA FEL experiment

چکیده
We present the results of numerical calculations of the effects of noise, slippage and superradiance in the UCLA infrared (IR) free electron laser (FEL). The experiment, which uses a high brightness electron beam produced by a photocathode RF gun and a 1.5 cm period planar undulator, will compare the FELevolution starting from noise to that starting from an input signal . Numerical studies indicate that we can observe saturation, optical guiding effects and a superradrant spike .

First Demonstration of a Slippage-dominant Superradiant Free-electron Laser Amplifier
We report the first experimental demonstration of a slippagedominant superradiant free-electron laser (FEL) using an ultrafast seed-laser pulse. We measured the evolution of the longitudinal phase space in the slippage-dominant superradiant regime. With a roughly 1% variation in the electron beam energy, we observed a seed-like fully longitudinal coherence, and a 2% wavelength shift from the se...

A comprehensive analysis is presented that describes amplification of a seed THz pulse in a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL) driven by a photoinjector. The dynamics of the radiation pulse and the modulated electron beam are modeled using the time-dependent FEL code, GENESIS 1.3. A 10-ps (FWHM) electron beam with a peak current of 50–100 A allows amplification of a 1 kW seed pulse in the fr...

Seeded high-gain FELs, which can generate very powerful radiation pulses in a relatively compact undulator and simultaneously modulate the electron beam longitudinally on the seed wavelength, are important tools for the advanced accelerator development. A single-pass 0.5-9 THz FEL amplifier-buncher driven by a regular photoinjector is being built at the UCLA Neptune Laboratory. FEL interactions...

* UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1547 # UCLA Department of Electrical Engineering. Abstract Since typically FEL undulator magnets have period length in the cm range, and the normalized magnetic field strength K is usually close to unity to guarantee a good coupling, a very high energy electron beam is needed to access the UV and x-ray region of the electromagnet...
متن کاملA study of linewidth, noise and fluctuations in a FEL operating in SASE
We study the evolution of the FEL radiation intensity and spectrum starting from noise in the electron beam longitudinal distribution . Due to the slippage both the time and frequency structure of the emitted radiation pulse show a very different behavior when the bunch length is much longer than or of the order of the cooperation length h . The occurrence of superradtant spikes is discussed. W...
